The large format scanning of Instructor Jointed Toys, by Bess Bruce Cleavland, 1920, books one and two, is complete. Next up, the manual cleaning up of each image of background junk not relevant to the subject.
Who was Ms. Cleaveland? From the Ohio Memory Collection comes this brief bio:
"Bess Bruce Cleaveland was from Washington Court House, Ohio and attended art school in New York. She taught art and illustrated children's books, postcards and teaching materials for health and safety and Sunday School in the 1910s-1930s"
An accomplished illustrator and artist, Ms. Cleaveland's iconic illustrations for children's books set a style for later illustrators that can be seen in her interpretations of classic children's stories.
Instructor Jointed Toys is being prepped for both digital download and print. This and future books of usable plans and illustrations will be offered in this format: Printable PDF at full dimensions; trade paperback at 8.5" x 11". If color is present, the reprint will be in color. Otherwise, each image is scanned in grayscale, cleaned page by page, and presented looking as close to the original would have looked at the time of publication.
I predict that these will be the most enjoyable books for me to work on simply because they are so lovely and fun!
Till next, Gary
